Annual Fall Fire School
Vol 26 Summer

When it’s fall in Beaumont, TX, the occasional puff of smoke near Interstate 10 signals the beginning of a special time in the area.  The last week in October 2011 ushers in the annual educational opportunities for the world’s emergency responders to hone their skills and be brought up to speed on current issues in emergency response.

The BEST Complex Annual Fall Fire School (BAFFS) will be held October 22-28, 2011.  Industrial Fire Brigade Members and Municipal Firefighter’s both Volunteer and paid, attend the educational event.  Courses are available in many disciplines such as Live-fire, rescue, hazardous materials, leadership, CPR, and Fire Service Instructor certifications.

These opportunities allow participants the much needed ability to engage live-fire each year for training as well as attend courses for National Certifications such as Pro-Board Accreditation.

The Training is conducted at Beaumont Emergency Training (BEST) Complex, one of the largest live-fueled fire training facilities in the world. Emergency responders from industry and community paid and volunteer departments need to experience working as a team in near-real-life incidents to gain proficiency. All of the hands-on training is provided by guest instructors who donate their time, talent and travel to ensure that responders are fully prepared for the incidents that they are required to respond to. The dedication of these individuals and their commitment and high ideals are especially appreciated by all training participants and organizers.

BEST Complex reacted to input from local area facilities that desired to resurrect the idea of the previous Lamar University Annual Fire School, which had served the petrochemical and firefighting community very well for over 30 years.  Drawing on the expertise of many area emergency response leaders, planning committees were formed and worked diligently to determine course offerings and logistics.  That effort culminated in the 1st BEST Complex Annual Fall Fire School in October 2010.  The outstanding spirit of teamwork among the individuals, organizations, staff, industries and municipalities involved in the school resulted in the highest level of education possible.

For 2011, the courses offered are very cost effective.  These opportunities are aligned with pricing structures that assist the volunteer and paid departments with maximizing their training dollar.   Industrial firefighting, rescue, and hazardous materials course pricing structures are also very economical.  Early registration discounts are available for significant savings which ends September 9, 2011.

During BAFFS, several supporting manufacturers will be on hand to demonstrate and show their respective equipment.  These manufacturers have been avid supporters of BEST Complex and have a serious commitment to industry and the volunteer and paid fire service.  Task Force Tips, Scott Health & Safety, Chemguard, Williams Fire & Hazard Control, Elkhart Brass and Ansul are among those that will be on the field.

Out of town participants will find accommodations at the host hotel, the MCM Elegante in Beaumont, most pleasing.  They are offering a special BAFFS school rate and are just minutes away from BEST Complex. Visit their website at www.mcmelegantebeau for more information. (See service directory.)

So as the leaves begin to change and the temperatures start to cool in Southeast Texas, remember that the World’s emergency responders are in Beaumont each year practicing skills to keep you safe.                          C
